Introducción

The cup type anemometer (also known as a 3 cup anemometer or wind cup anemometer) is a meteorological sensor designed to measure wind speed. Utilizing a three- or four-cup configuration, it converts wind energy into the kinetic energy of a rotating shaft. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including meteorological stations, wind farms, centrales fotovoltaicas, smart agriculture, airports, ports, bridges, construction sites, and environmental monitoring.

As a standard instrument of this type, it typically features a low starting wind speed of 0.3 m/s, enabling stable and continuous measurement; it also supports multiple output interfaces—such as RS485, SDI-12, and 4–20 mA—making it ideal for long-term outdoor operation and integration into various automated monitoring systems.

Structure cup type anemometer sensor

  • Cup anemometer:
The most distinctive feature of a cup anemometer is its rotating cups. Typically, a cup anemometer consists of three to four cups, with horizontal arms extending from a central shaft. These cups capture the wind and rotate according to the wind speed.
  • Shaft:
The cups are attached to a central shaft, allowing them to rotate freely. This shaft is mounted on a base or support structure to ensure the anemometer’s stability.
  • Dial and Indicator:
The rotating cups are connected to a dial or indicator that provides a visual display of wind speed. Depending on the application, these dials may be calibrated in miles per hour, kilometers per hour, or meters per second.
  • Sensores:
Modern cup anemometers typically incorporate sensors to measure the rotational speed of the cups more accurately. These sensors convert rotational motion into electrical signals, which can then be analyzed and processed.

Working Principle of cup type wind speed sensor

  1. When airflow passes over the wind cups, the different angles at which the cups face the wind create a pressure difference perpendicular to the axis of rotation, causing the cups to rotate clockwise; the higher the wind speed, the greater the initial pressure difference, and the greater the rotational acceleration of the wind cups.
  2. Once the wind speed stabilizes, the wind cup reaches a state of uniform rotation, and its rotational speed is directly proportional to the wind speed.
  3. The rotation of the wind cup drives the coaxial multi-tooth shading disc or magnetic rod to rotate, which in turn generates a pulse signal proportional to the rotational speed via the circuit. After being counted and converted by a counter, this signal yields the actual wind speed value. Products utilizing magnetic encoding technology convert changes in the magnetic field into electrical signals, offering stronger resistance to electromagnetic interference and higher reliability and stability in environments with electromagnetic interference.

Preguntas frecuentes

How do I choose the right Cup Type Anemometer?

Consider the required wind speed range, accuracy, output signal, installation environment, communication interface, and power supply. Choosing the right configuration ensures reliable performance and easy system integration.

Does the Cup Type Anemometer require regular maintenance?

The sensor requires minimal maintenance. Regular inspection, cleaning of the rotating cups, and checking of bearings and electrical connections help maintain measurement accuracy and extend the service life.
