Question 1

What does a highway visibility sensor measure?

Accepted Answer

A highway visibility sensor measures atmospheric visibility, typically expressed as Meteorological Optical Range (MOR). It provides a quantitative indication of visibility conditions at a specific monitoring point. Unlike a pavement sensor, it does not directly measure road surface temperature, water, ice, or snow. Its main purpose is to provide continuous visibility data for monitoring fog and other low-visibility conditions on highways.

Question 2

How does a highway visibility sensor detect low visibility?

Accepted Answer

Most modern highway visibility sensors use optical scattering technology to estimate atmospheric visibility. The sensor detects changes in light scattering caused by particles in the air and converts the optical measurement into a visibility value. Continuous measurements allow the monitoring system to identify changes in visibility and provide data for configured warnings or traffic-management procedures.

Question 3

What measurement range should a highway visibility sensor have?

Accepted Answer

The required measurement range depends on the road environment and the visibility conditions that need to be monitored. The sensor should provide stable measurements within the range that matters to the project, particularly under low-visibility conditions. For example, the Yantai Sensor XF-CQ10 provides a visibility measurement range of 10 m to 10 km, which covers a wide range of highway monitoring requirements.

Question 4

Where should a highway visibility sensor be installed?

Accepted Answer

Visibility sensors are commonly installed at locations where atmospheric visibility can change significantly or where visibility information is important for traffic operations. Typical locations include fog-prone sections, bridges, mountain roads, tunnel entrances and exits, and other critical road sections. The sensor should have a clear optical path and be positioned so that its measurements represent the conditions of the target road section.

Question 5

Can a highway visibility sensor detect ice or water on the road?

Accepted Answer

No. A highway visibility sensor measures atmospheric visibility, while ice, water, snow, and pavement temperature require a road surface condition sensor. These sensors can be used together in an RWIS: the visibility sensor provides atmospheric visibility data, while pavement sensors provide information about surface conditions. Using both allows operators to evaluate atmospheric and road-surface conditions separately.

Question 6

Can a highway visibility sensor be integrated with an RWIS?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many highway visibility sensors support interfaces such as RS485 and Modbus, allowing measurement data to be collected by a data logger or RTU and transmitted to an RWIS platform. Integration depends on the sensor interface, data format, communication network, and existing system architecture. These details should be confirmed before deployment to avoid compatibility issues during installation.

Question 7

Can highway visibility sensors operate in rain, snow, and freezing conditions?

Accepted Answer

They can be designed for outdoor operation, but environmental conditions should be considered when selecting the sensor. Rain, snow, dust, condensation, frost, temperature changes, and stray light can affect optical measurements or increase maintenance requirements. Buyers should check the sensor's operating temperature, optical protection, environmental protection, and cleaning requirements based on the climate and installation conditions of the highway.

Question 8

What should I check before purchasing a highway visibility sensor?

Accepted Answer

Before purchasing, check the measurement range, low-visibility performance, environmental protection, communication interface, power supply, installation requirements, and maintenance needs. It is also important to confirm how the sensor will connect to the existing RWIS or traffic monitoring system. The final selection should be based on the actual road environment and monitoring requirements rather than a single specification on the product datasheet.
