Shandong Smart Agriculture IoT Demonstration Base Weather Monitoring System Project

Project Background

The project is located at a smart agriculture demonstration base in Shandong, China. The facility includes multiple solar greenhouses growing tomatoes, strawberries, and cherries, together with a complementary photovoltaic area. Greenhouse climate, outdoor weather, and soil conditions all affect daily crop management, but relying mainly on manual observations makes it difficult to track environmental changes consistently across multiple growing areas.

The customer needed a monitoring system that could collect outdoor weather data, greenhouse microclimate measurements, and soil parameters in one management interface. Yantai Sensor supplied a monitoring configuration combining an outdoor automatic weather station, greenhouse microclimate monitoring instruments, soil sensors, wireless data transmission, and a cloud monitoring platform. Monitoring data can be viewed remotely and displayed alongside video feeds on the central control screen, helping staff review conditions across the greenhouse areas and outdoor site.

  • Project Location: Shandong, China
  • Outdoor Monitoring Parameters: Air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, and light intensity
  • Application: Smart greenhouse cultivation, orchard monitoring, soil condition monitoring, and photovoltaic site weather observation

On-Site Installation Process

Outdoor Station & Greenhouse Sensor Installation

The main automatic weather station was installed in an open outdoor location with suitable exposure to wind, rainfall, and sunlight. A concrete base supports the mounting structure, while the solar power module, data acquisition equipment, and LED display are installed according to the site configuration. Inside the tomato, strawberry, and cherry greenhouses, microclimate monitoring instruments were positioned to collect temperature, humidity, light, and CO₂ data. Soil sensors were installed in the root-zone area for soil temperature, moisture, and EC measurement.

System Integration & Commissioning

After installation, the team checked sensor connections, power supply, data acquisition, and 4G communication. The monitoring equipment was connected to the cloud platform, and the collected data were made available through the central management interface. Video feeds and environmental readings were configured for combined display on the control-room screen. Threshold alerts were set for relevant environmental parameters so that staff could receive notifications when configured limits were exceeded. The final checks covered data updates, remote access, and historical record retrieval.

Equipment Used

The system combines outdoor weather monitoring, greenhouse climate sensing, soil measurement, and remote data management. The equipment configuration can be matched to the requirements of each growing area.

  • Agricultural Weather Station: Measures outdoor air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, and light or solar radiation according to the selected configuration. Supports data logging and remote monitoring.
  • Soil Temperature and Humidity Integrated Sensor: Measures soil temperature and moisture. The product specification also lists soil electrical conductivity, which can support root-zone soil monitoring when included in the selected sensor configuration.
  • Data Acquisition & Communication Unit: Collects readings from connected sensors and transfers monitoring data to the cloud platform through the configured communication interface.
  • Solar Power System: Supplies power to the outdoor monitoring station where the selected installation uses photovoltaic power and battery storage.
  • LED Display & Central Monitoring Screen: Displays selected weather data locally and presents monitoring information through the central management interface.
  • Video Monitoring System: Provides visual coverage of designated greenhouse and outdoor areas, with video feeds displayed alongside monitoring data where configured.

Project Highlights

  • Outdoor and Greenhouse Monitoring: Combines outdoor weather observation with greenhouse microclimate measurements across different growing areas.
  • Crop-Zone Soil Measurement: Collects soil temperature, moisture, and EC data in the root zone to support irrigation and nutrient management.
  • Centralized Data Access: Brings sensor readings into a cloud platform for remote viewing, historical records, and configured threshold alerts.
  • Combined Video and Environmental Display: Allows staff to review video feeds and monitoring data on the central control screen.
  • Multiple Monitoring Applications: The outdoor station also provides weather observations for the photovoltaic area.
  • Flexible Sensor Configuration: The monitoring parameters can be selected according to the requirements of the outdoor site, greenhouse, and soil-monitoring locations.

Project Results

The monitoring system provides centralized access to outdoor weather, greenhouse microclimate, and soil data across the demonstration base. Staff can review temperature, humidity, light, CO₂, and soil readings through the cloud platform and central display, while configured alerts help identify conditions requiring attention, such as low greenhouse temperatures, high humidity, or changes in soil moisture. Historical records support the review of growing conditions and inform decisions on ventilation, irrigation, and nutrient management.

Customer Feedback

“The system makes it easier to check greenhouse temperature, humidity, and soil conditions. We can view the data remotely and receive alerts when conditions need attention, reducing the need for frequent manual checks.”
