Tianjin Xiaozhan Rice Smart Farmland Weather Monitoring System Project

Project Background

Xiaozhan rice is a well-known regional rice variety in Tianjin, China. To support more standardized and data-driven cultivation, the Xiaozhan rice demonstration area introduced an automatic farmland weather monitoring system to provide continuous field weather information. Traditional farming often relies on growers’ experience to assess weather conditions, making it difficult to track environmental changes during key growth stages such as tillering and grain filling.

Yantai Sensor supplied a solar-powered monitoring system that collects air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, and light intensity. The collected data are transmitted to a cloud platform via 4G for remote access and historical review, while an outdoor LED display presents real-time weather readings at the demonstration site, supporting daily field management and smart agriculture demonstrations.

  • Project Location: Xiaozhan Town, Tianjin, China
  • Application: Smart rice farming and farmland weather monitoring
  • Monitoring Parameters: Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, and light intensity

On-Site Installation Process

Site Selection & Mounting Preparation

The monitoring station was installed at a representative location within the rice-growing demonstration area. During site selection, the team considered the surrounding field layout and avoided nearby obstructions that could interfere with sensor ventilation, wind measurement, or light exposure.

The mounting pole and installation accessories were selected for outdoor use in a paddy field environment. Given the soft ground, high humidity, and frequent exposure to rainwater, the installation also required attention to mounting stability and cable protection. The solar panel orientation was adjusted to improve sunlight exposure and support the station’s off-grid power supply.

Weather Station & LED Display Installation

After the mounting structure was prepared, the team installed the weather sensors, solar power components, data acquisition and transmission equipment, and protective enclosure. Cable connections were sealed against moisture and rainwater to reduce the risk of water ingress during long-term outdoor operation.

The LED information display was installed separately beside the farmland viewing path. Its high-brightness red digital display allows agricultural staff and visitors to read current weather measurements directly at the site.

System Commissioning & Data Transmission

Following installation, the team checked sensor connections, power supply, data acquisition, and 4G communication. The system was commissioned to support automatic weather data collection, local display, and cloud-based data transmission.

After commissioning, users could access current measurements and historical weather records through the monitoring platform using a computer or mobile device. This provides agricultural staff with an additional source of information when reviewing field conditions and arranging rice cultivation activities.

Equipment Used

The project uses a compact automatic weather monitoring configuration designed for outdoor farmland applications.

  • Automatic Weather Station: Integrates air temperature, relative humidity, Hall-effect wind speed and direction sensors, a tipping-bucket rain gauge, and a light sensor to collect the main meteorological parameters required for field observation.
  • Wind Speed Sensor: Hall-effect measurement principle, measuring range of 0–60 m/s, with a stated accuracy of ±(0.3 + 0.03V) m/s.
  • Wind Direction Sensor: Hall-effect measurement principle, measuring range of 0–360°, with a stated accuracy of ±3°.
  • Solar Power System: Solar panels and energy storage battery provide power without requiring a direct connection to the grid.
  • Outdoor LED Information Display: A dual-pole installation with a waterproof aluminum-alloy enclosure and high-brightness red digital display for presenting real-time weather readings.
  • Data Acquisition & Communication Box: Contains the data acquisition module and 4G wireless communication module for collecting measurements and uploading data to the cloud platform.
  • Mounting & Protection Accessories: Galvanized mounting pole, waterproof cables, and lightning protection components support outdoor installation in the farmland environment.

The monitoring platform supports remote data viewing, historical data export, and threshold-based alerts according to the configured monitoring requirements.

Project Highlights

  • Weather Monitoring for Rice Cultivation: Collects temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall, and light data to help agricultural staff review changing field conditions during different rice growth stages.
  • Solar-Powered Outdoor Operation: Uses solar panels and battery storage to operate at farmland locations without a direct grid power connection.
  • Local Data Display: The outdoor LED screen presents current weather measurements beside the viewing path, making monitoring information accessible to field staff and visitors.
  • 4G Data Transmission: Uploads collected measurements to the cloud platform, allowing users to check current data and review historical records remotely.
  • Adapted to Paddy Field Conditions: Waterproof cable connections, protective installation components, and an outdoor mounting structure are used to address moisture and rain exposure in the rice-growing environment.
  • Low-Power System Configuration: The stated equipment operating temperature range is -20°C to 80°C, supporting outdoor monitoring across a range of seasonal conditions.

Project Results

The completed weather monitoring system provides continuous field measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, and light intensity in the Xiaozhan rice demonstration area. Data are displayed locally on the outdoor LED screen and transmitted to the cloud platform through the 4G module, giving agricultural staff access to current readings and historical records without relying entirely on manual observation.

These records provide a practical reference for reviewing weather changes during important rice growth stages and planning irrigation and other field operations. The LED display also makes the monitoring system part of the demonstration area’s public-facing agricultural information display, helping visitors understand how weather data are used in smart farming.

Customer Feedback

The project customer recognized the system’s practical value for farmland weather observation and the convenience of accessing monitoring data remotely. The outdoor LED display also provides a straightforward way for staff and visitors to view field weather information. Yantai Sensor’s technical support during installation and commissioning helped complete the system setup and bring the monitoring functions into operation.
