Question 1

What sensors are required for a solar power plant?

Accepted Answer

Basic solar power plant sensors usually includes solar irradiance, module temperature, and ambient temperature measurements. Wind speed, wind direction, humidity, rainfall, and soiling sensors can be added according to site conditions and monitoring requirements. The final sensor package depends on plant size, module configuration, local climate, applicable standards, and the level of performance and environmental data required.

Question 2

How many sensors does a solar power plant need?

Accepted Answer

There is no fixed number for every PV plant solar sensors list. Sensor quantity depends on plant capacity, array layout, measurement class, site conditions, and whether multiple measurement points or redundancy are required. Smaller projects may use a limited set of instruments, while utility-scale plants can require several locations to obtain representative environmental and irradiance data across the site.

Question 3

What is the difference between POA and GHI irradiance?

Accepted Answer

POA irradiance measures solar radiation on the same plane as the PV modules, making it directly relevant to array performance analysis. GHI measures global horizontal irradiance and is used mainly for solar-resource and general weather assessment. For most PV performance monitoring applications, POA data provides a closer representation of the radiation received by the module surface.

Question 4

What should I check when choosing a solar irradiance sensor?

Accepted Answer

Check the sensor's measurement range, accuracy, measurement class, cosine response, response time, calibration, and long-term stability. The required specification depends on the monitoring standard and purpose of the project. For procurement, it is better to evaluate the complete performance specification than select a sensor based on one accuracy figure. Calibration documentation and maintenance requirements should also be confirmed before ordering.

Question 5

Why is module temperature measured separately from ambient temperature?

Accepted Answer

Ambient temperature describes the surrounding air, while a module temperature sensor records the actual thermal condition of the PV module. Under strong sunlight, module temperature can be considerably different from air temperature. Recording both values gives operators better environmental data for interpreting PV operating conditions and comparing changes in generation under different weather conditions.

Question 6

Can solar sensors connect to a PV SCADA system?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when the sensor output and communication interface are compatible with the plant's acquisition equipment. Common options include RS485, Modbus RTU, 4–20 mA, 0–5 V, 0–10 V, LoRa, NB-IoT, and Ethernet. Before purchase, confirm the SCADA or data logger interface, power supply, communication settings, cable requirements, and supported protocols to avoid integration problems during installation.

Question 7

Are soiling sensors necessary for every PV plant?

Accepted Answer

No. Soiling sensors are mainly considered where dust accumulation can cause measurable energy losses or increase cleaning costs. They are more relevant for desert, dry, Gobi, and dusty sites than for areas with frequent natural rainfall. Soiling data can help operators estimate contamination losses and determine whether cleaning is justified based on actual site conditions rather than relying only on a fixed cleaning schedule.

Question 8

Should I use individual sensors or a solar weather station?

Accepted Answer

Individualsolar power plant sensors are suitable when a project needs specific measurements or requires replacement of an existing instrument. A solar weather station is more practical when several parameters, such as irradiance, temperature, wind, humidity, and module temperature, need to be collected at one location. The decision should consider plant size, required parameters, available mounting space, wiring, and the existing SCADA architecture.
