Question 1

What Is Required for PV Monitoring Installation?

Accepted Answer

A PV monitoring installation typically includes environmental sensors, mounting hardware, cables, a compatible data logger or gateway, and a monitoring platform. The exact configuration depends on the project’s monitoring objectives. Before procurement, confirm the required measurements, sensor specifications, power supply, communication interfaces, and installation conditions. Checking these requirements early helps prevent compatibility issues and unnecessary equipment costs.

Question 2

Where Should Solar Irradiance Sensors Be Installed in a PV Plant?

Accepted Answer

Sensor placement depends on the measurement objective. A plane-of-array (POA) sensor should match the orientation and tilt of the monitored PV modules, while a global horizontal irradiance (GHI) sensor is mounted horizontally. Avoid shading and obstructions that could distort readings. For tracking systems or bifacial modules, define the measurement position according to the monitoring objective and project requirements.

Question 3

Which Sensors Should You Choose for a PV Monitoring System?

Accepted Answer

Sensor selection depends on the parameters needed for performance analysis and environmental monitoring. A basic setup may include a solar irradiance sensor and a module temperature sensor. Larger plants may also need ambient temperature, humidity, wind speed, and wind direction measurements. Define the monitoring objectives first, then select the sensors and measurement ranges required by the project rather than adding instruments without a clear purpose.

Question 4

How Do You Connect PV Monitoring Sensors to a Data Logger?

Accepted Answer

Check each sensor’s power supply, output signal, wiring requirements, and communication protocol before connecting it to the data logger. Depending on the equipment, interfaces may include analog signals or RS485 with Modbus. Configure channel assignments, measurement units, communication addresses, and sampling intervals according to the equipment documentation. After connection, verify that readings are correctly recorded and transmitted to the monitoring platform.

Question 5

How Can You Verify Solar Monitoring Data Accuracy?

Accepted Answer

Check sensor alignment, cleanliness, measurement units, timestamps, and logger configuration. Compare readings with manufacturer specifications and, where available, a suitable reference instrument under comparable measurement conditions. Irradiance measurements should use the same measurement plane when being compared. Also review historical data for missing records or unexplained fluctuations. A numerical reading alone does not establish measurement accuracy or confirm that the sensor represents actual site conditions.

Question 6

What Causes Missing Data in a PV Monitoring System?

Accepted Answer

Missing data can result from power interruptions, loose wiring, incorrect channel settings, communication faults, logger storage issues, or interrupted uploads. First, identify whether the data is missing at the sensor, data logger, gateway, or monitoring platform. Then check power, connections, communication status, timestamps, and upload settings. Locating the interruption helps narrow down the cause before replacing sensors or other equipment.

Question 7

What Should Be Checked During PV Monitoring System Commissioning?

Accepted Answer

Commissioning should verify sensor readings, channel assignments, communication, measurement units, timestamps, and historical data continuity. Confirm that each parameter appears correctly on the monitoring platform and that records are complete. Document test results, sensor configurations, communication settings, and unresolved issues. Trial-run duration and acceptance criteria should follow project specifications, equipment requirements, and the contract rather than a universal time period.

Question 8

How Often Should PV Monitoring Sensors Be Cleaned and Calibrated?

Accepted Answer

Cleaning and calibration intervals depend on sensor specifications, site conditions, and project requirements. Dust, bird droppings, moisture, and other deposits can affect irradiance measurements. Inspect sensor surfaces, mounting hardware, cables, connectors, and enclosures, and clean them according to manufacturer instructions. Follow the specified calibration requirements and document the results. Reference-instrument comparisons can identify potential deviations but do not always replace formal calibration.
